Geoffrey Chaucer Stance on Feminism - 1254 Words

The investigation into whether or not Geoffrey Chaucer was ahead of his time in terms of his views on feminism has been up for debate for hundreds of years. The Wife of Bath’s Prologue is just one solitary example of the complicated nature of Chaucer’s belief system. On the one hand, we have many strong female characters that despite still being extremely dependant on the men in their lives, know what they want out of life. From a contrasting point of view, readers see a group of men, including Chaucer as the writer himself, making fun of the very nature of women as a whole. Is this really how Chaucer felt towards women, or is the prologue of The Wife of Bath’s Tale simply a parody of the opinions of his time? She stays with her fifth husband despite the fact that she can still feel the bruises he had left on her body ages ago (505-508). Despite what the Catholic church or society might have to say about the matter, Alyson does not consider herself to be the property of any of the men in her life. They told me about crucial decisions I would make that would have a resounding effect on accomplishing my dream. What I admired most about them was that they never said that I wouldnt accomplish my dreams. Many times, people give reasons for failure: either you are too slow, too little, or too fat something to prevent you from succeeding. You must prove to these people that you can achieve whatever you want as long as you work hard and dont forget your dreams. They encouraged me to work relentlessly at my dreams and to believe that theyll come true. As I look back at A.B.A., I see how much it influenced my life. Since returning, I have continued to spend my days working as hard as I possibly could to achieve my dreams. All the hard work and dedication is starting to pay off. I have received letters from two Division I basketball programs. Almost all my decisions now are made while reflecting on my dreams. Im willing to go out and do whatever it takes to accomplish these dreams. I leave you now with something that one of my teammates, whom I the respect and view as a great friend, said to me: There are three types of dreamers in this world: those who talk about their dreams, those who wonder how nice it would be to accomplish those dreams, and those who go out and work to achieve those dreams. People working in organizations with less the fifteen people are not entitled to the seven days sick off annually. It would also be helpful to the workers if they could get more benefits when working on a part time basis just as the full time workers get because this would reduce the number of people targeting the full time job market due of the benefits it attracts compared to the part time. Address discrimination at work Discrimination in the area of family responsibility has also been a challenge which needs to be addres sed to reduce cases of work-family conflict. Women who opt to take time off and care for their young children, low income workers and also fathers who shoulder the responsibility of caring for their children are some of the people that face this kind of discrimination. In Chris’ case, he could be suffering from the work-family conflict because of fear of such discrimination. Fellow employees should offer support to their colleagues who have responsibilities like Chris’ without making him feel as if they are discriminating him. There should be tolerance among the employees so that everyone can have a sense of belonging without feeling as if the rest are discriminating against them (Shelton, 2006). Affordable childcare institutions Chris can also try to bring in someone to take care of the son. This could be one of the relatives who he is comfortable with. This is because there are some of the relatives who one may be uncomfortable leaving their children under. This may include a sexually abusive or a negligent relative. According to Kelly (2011), this would help reduce the stress arising from the family and be able to concentrate more on the work without worrying about his son. In absence of this, he should consider putting his son under affordable childcare institutions. The government should help in setting up affordable institutions where children can be left during the day as their parents continue working. The government has been lax in looking into the matter of affordable childcare institutions and in the case of the existing ones; the employees there are poorly paid. This leads to poor services and in some instances very unaffordable charges in good institutions. Conclusion Chris’ case is representation of the problem that majority of the people are facing. The policymakers need to take seriously how life is like for a typical citizen and come up with measures to alleviate the problem. This would show the people that the government is concerned with the welfare and the needs of her citizens’ contrary to the belief held by many, that the government is uncaring and not concerned with the everyday struggles of its citizens. Work-family conflict cause a lot of emotional instability both at home and in the place of work leading to low output and dissatisfaction which is a key reason why it needs immediate attention. The Catholic Church during this time had become a very corrupt institution, and there was hardly any town in Europe during the late Middle Ages which did not have complaints against their clergy. There were complaints of maladministration, concubinage, or fiscalism of clergy, and the church was involved in selling of important ecclesiastical posts to the highest bidder and imposing regular indulgences on people, not only to remit their sins, but, the sins of their dead ones. All these factors accumulated to lay the foundation for the Protestant Reformation, which was to leave Europe in a political and religious turmoil for over three centuries. (Craig, Pg. 424 426) Although Martin Luther was the first one to start Reformation in Germany, almost all different nations had their own versions of Reformation, which were not related to each other. For example, the Reformation in Geneva was led by John Calvin, while the Swiss Reformation was led by Ulrich Zwingli. Although all the Reformation Movements had the basic idea of returning to early Christianity and boycott the corrupt practices of Catholic Church, still instead of combining together as one force against the Catholic Church, they had their own issues amongst themselves and in the long race developed a hatred for each other. Coaching and Performance Improvement Analysis - Essay Example In this paper, I am going to talk about the coaching and performance improvement I have undertaken with the Production Supervisor of our organization. He had been hired three months ago after our previous supervisor left very abruptly for a competing organization with just a month’s notice. However, since he had served for five years with the organization he was allowed to leave without too much fuss. Since he had left in the middle of the year the Human Resources Department did not have much time or choice but to hire a candidate with experience from a related but different industry. It was thought that owing to the candidate’s experience, he would soon pick up the skills and knowledge about the production function but sadly he has not been able to come up to the mark after even three months on the job. Productivity is suffering and as the Training and Development Manager I had been asked to step in and give the supervisor the required coaching so as to improve his und erstanding of the skills needed in the textile business (he has come in from the engineering sector and had been overseeing the production of motorcycle parts) as the situation is a little different here. Although he does have the required level of interest and understanding, he is a little apprehensive about taking charge of the workers who are aware of his inexperience in the textile sector and sometimes exploit this situation to their advantage. To cover his lack of skills he has developed an authoritative attitude which does not settle well with the older and more experienced staff. Analysis of the Root Causes of His Production Deficiency After a close observation and personality analysis of the Production Supervisor I have come to the conclusion that he just needs a little coaching to come up to the expectations of management regarding the task assigned to him. Although it seems that he is in the wrong industry, I am confident from what I have observed about him that he can soo n come up to the requirements of the job even though the industry he represented in the past is far removed from this present one. The basic requirements of managing the production process are to schedule the production process in terms of orders placed and deliveries to be made or shipments to be affected as per schedule is already known in advance. Although his lack of skills and knowledge is evident for the time being in this industry, the real issue is that he is trying to compensate by being authoritative and a perfectionist, afraid of taking a wrong step and not knowing fully about the alternatives available to him. He is frustrated because his efforts to take charge are not being appreciated by the older and more experienced employees under his control, as they were used to managing the function with a minimum of interference. However in his zest to contribute, he likes to be seen as doing something most of the time. There is no lack of motivation, but one can see that his me thods to take charge are not working with some staff. I could have intervened directly with the staff on his behalf, but would rather he do it himself.
